The most consequential listing news of the week did not come from a crypto exchange. Charles Schwab, the brokerage managing over $12 trillion in client assets, announced on Wednesday, August 27 that it will add spot trading in Solana (SOL), Avalanche (AVAX) and Chainlink (LINK) to its Schwab Crypto accounts "in the coming months," per its press release and The Block. It is the first expansion of the product since spot bitcoin and ether trading began rolling out to retail clients in May 2026, and it moves three altcoins into a distribution channel that no crypto-native exchange can match: the default brokerage of American retirement money.

We track this page under SOL because it is the largest of the three by market cap, but the mechanics apply to all of them equally. There is no launch date, only a window, and Schwab was unusually explicit about its escape hatch, reserving the right to delay, change or withdraw support for an announced asset if market, regulatory, operational or risk conditions shift. That language is why the status here reads announced rather than listed, and why we would not be surprised if the go-live slips a quarter. Announcements from regulated brokerages are commitments of intent, not countdown clocks, and anyone positioning around a specific date is trading a fact that does not exist yet.

What Schwab actually launched, and what it charges

Schwab Crypto went live in May 2026 with just bitcoin and ether, available through Schwab.com, the Schwab Mobile app and thinkorswim, with trading offered in every US state except New York and Louisiana, per coverage of the rollout. Paxos handles sub-custody and trade execution behind the scenes. The fee is 75 basis points per trade, per The Block, which is expensive next to any crypto exchange an active trader would use. That gap is the point: Schwab is not competing for traders, it is competing for the client who already keeps cash, index funds and an IRA at the firm and wants a 2 percent crypto allocation without learning what a seed phrase is. Joe Vietri, Schwab's head of digital assets, framed the expansion exactly that way, saying clients get "more choices to build a digital asset allocation alongside the investing and banking experience they know and trust."

Why this matters more than another exchange listing

The scale is the story. Schwab reported 39.9 million active brokerage accounts and about $13.04 trillion in client assets as of July 31, 2026, per Yahoo Finance. For comparison, the entire crypto market is worth under $3 trillion. SOL, AVAX and LINK are already listed everywhere that matters in crypto, so this announcement adds nothing for the crypto-native buyer. What it adds is a new species of buyer: the Schwab client who would never touch an exchange, now one click from spot SOL in the same interface as their index funds. That is the same dynamic we covered when Coinbase and Robinhood listed BNB, access catching up to assets rather than assets chasing access, except pointed at a vastly larger pool of traditional money.

The selection itself tells you how a compliance-first institution reads the market. Solana, Avalanche and Chainlink are, by 2026 standards, blue chips: long track records, deep liquidity, spot ETFs either live or filed, and none of them carries meme risk. Our read is that this listing will not move SOL's price on announcement day, and indeed it did not, landing as it did into a week dominated by the Fed. It matters on a longer clock. Every brokerage that normalizes altcoin exposure makes the next one's decision easier, and Schwab moving first among the giant retail brokerages puts pressure on the rest of the field to follow. We will flip this page to listed, and note the exact date in the events table, the day SOL trading actually opens. Until then, treat the coming months as exactly that.

Not financial advice Listings often spike and then bleed once the initial hype unwinds. Nothing here is a suggestion to buy this token. Verify dates on the exchange's own announcement page before trading: schedules slip.
